These photos were taken while on a group tour of the bunker for hotel guests.
The tour begins at the bunker tunnel entrance, which is hidden in a wooded area
behind the West Virginia Wing of the hotel, and through which supplies and
activities which were intended to be confidential were conducted. The
bunker is connected to the hotel now, but originally had two other entrances
which were public entrances to an exhibition hall under the West Virginia Wing.
Staff could also enter the bunker through those entrances. Hotel guests
were often inside the bunker while attending events in the exhibition hall,
which is actually inside the bunker and behind two hidden blast doors. The
photos on this page show the entrance tunnel from the back, a blast door located
just at the outer end of the tunnel, decontamination, mechanical room and
generators, and water supply facilities. The cases of freeze-dried food on
display in the tunnel were added after the government left for effect. All
of the food originally stored here was taken to other government facilities when
this site was closed. The bunker was outfitted with a large kitchen and
dining area, and had substantial freezer and refrigerator space. Steaks
and food for the hotel's restaurants were stored and rotated through these
coolers so that there would have been plenty of New York Strip's for those
members of Congress who would have made it here in an emergency.
